A little Christmas update on Acupuncture from Kaye Rooney

December 11th, 2018

Many people think of acupuncture as mainly for pain relief for chronic pain from injuries or long-standing conditions like osteoarthritis and lower back pain.

So patients who come to me with muscular-skeletal complaints are always surprised when I ask how they’re sleeping and inquire into the state of their bowels. I want to know all about work and how the kids are doing at school too.

Why? Five Element acupuncture practitioners like me want to hear about all your symptoms – not just one. This is because acupuncture treats the whole person as a dynamic inter-related, interdependent and unique individual.

For close to three thousand years, Chinese medicine has emphasised balance and harmony in body, mind and spirit as essential to good health and long life. Every treatment is crafted to meet the needs of each individual patient, and so I want to know about the stresses and strains, the highs and lows – what’s in balance and what’s knocking you off course.

At this time of year, with excess all around us, balance is definitely in short supply. I’ve stuck this ancient Chinese saying to my fridge, reminding me of what I really need to do this Christmas to give peace a chance in my own body, mind and spirit – let go, back off, relax and breathe.

“Tension is who you think you should be.

Relaxation is who you are.”
