Herbal support for Hay Fever
May 31st, 2026
The current heatwave is fast coming to an end. Luckily, the sunny weather is set to continue with temperatures due to drop to more comfortable levels below 28 °C. Unluckily, for hay fever sufferers, this coincides with the first grass pollen level peak of the year from mid-May until July and pollen levels are forecast to remain high here for a while here in East Anglia.
If you are looking for an alternative to over-the-counter medications to treat hay fever, there are many herbs that can be used to help prevent and alleviate the symptoms such as itching eyes and throat, streaming nose, sneezing and headaches. Probably one of the most well-known of these herbs in Stinging Nettle. If you suffer from hay fever, you may have even tried it. However, you may or may not have had much success because how you take it, the dose you use and how long you take it for can dramatically affect the results. For example, the preparation used in advance of hay fever season to help prevention (typically a strong tea steeped for hours) may not be as effective as a tincture when it comes to treating acute hay fever symptoms.
Stinging Nettle is just one of the many herbs widely advertised and sold to help treat hay fever. So, what about the others you may have come across such as Chamomile, Ginger and Reishi mushroom? How do you know which particular herb or blend of herbs is the right one for you, your particular allergy and symptoms? This is where I can help you as a trained herbalist. I offer both full herbal medicine consultations (60-90 mins) and shorter minor ailment consultations (15-20 mins) where we can your discuss your symptoms and concerns. I can then prescribe or advise on an appropriate herbal remedy specific to you and your needs.
